A guide to Swarovski’s Crystal Specialty Coatings and Effects
AB-Aurore Boreale or "AB", the most popular Swarovski coating. AB coating is iridescent, & gives a pale rainbow effect. A clear crystal may appear slightly golden, with blue and pink highlights.
2X--"2x" denotes that the coating covers the entire crystal.
Alexandrite and Cantaloupe are crystal shades that change color depending on the light under which they're being viewed.
Aurum--a bright golden coating, made from real gold. It is most often found as 2X
Bermuda Blue--When viewed through clear crystal, it takes on a deep aqua/blue tone. When applied to the surface of the bead, it shimmers a navy blue.
CAL - Comet Argent Light--A bright silver finish, creating a mirror-like effect. When applied to half of a bead, half the bead looking like silver and the rest taking the color of the crystal itself.
Cantaloupe and Alexandrite are crystal shades that change color depending on the light under which they're being viewed.
Cosmojet--This special finish combines the sleek blackness of jet with the intense shimmer of lighter-colored crystals.
Crystal Copper--a hugely rich warm amber honey topaz.
Dorado--This finish has a bronze appearance. It is not transparent. Dorado is a half-coating of Gold. Dorado 2x (or Dorado 2 or II) is a gold coating all over, and the beads just look like little nuggets of gold.
Glacier Blue--Has a cobalt blue appearance on its surface and when viewed through clear crystal.
Golden Shadow--a soft, champagne color
Heliotrope--When viewed through clear crystal, it takes on a deep blue/purple & green appearance. When applied to the surface of a bead, it has a dull grey & brown tone.
Jet Hematite 2x--a metallic, gunmetal look, like Hematite.
Jet Nut 2x--a warm black, with a hint of brown.
Meridian Blue--shimmers a light blue with green overtones.
Metallic Blue--A rich deep blue metallic coating, usually applied to one half of the bead or pendant. Metallic Blue 2x--an all over coating that looks like a dark, steel, blue.
Satin--A smoky gray coating that adds a soft sheen and deepens the shade of the crystal.
Silver Shadow--just off-clear - it looks like a light grey in the larger beads, in the smaller beads, it's a softer shade of clear
Tabac--A dark, mellow, golden copper finish.
Transmission--Very similar to the Aurora Borealis (AB) effect, it appears to transmit or emulate the color of the garment on which it is worn.
Vitrail Medium & Vitrail Light--Gold coating on half the bead--reflects a lot of purple and green. When the coating is seen through clear crystal, it takes on strong red and green tones. Vitrail Light is just lighter in tone. dark watermelon hues when viewed through the crystal
Volcano--when viewed through clear crystal, it takes on strong purple & red tones.
White Opal Sky Blue and White Opal Star Shine are only applied to White Opal beads. The Sky Blue is a darker coating, the Star Shine, lighter, more silvery and more reflective.
